All about the Breitling Chronomat collection

The Swiss luxury watch brand Breitling has collections widely recognised for the precision of its chronographs and its close association with the world of aviation. Among them, one of the most emblematic is the collection Breitling Chronomat.

It is a line that has continued to evolve since the 1980s, both aesthetically and technically.

In this article we will analyse the origin of the Chronomat collection and its evolution over time.

All about the Breitling Chronomat collection

History of the Breitling Chronomat

Although the name Chronomat first appeared in the 1940s, when Breitling introduced a chronograph equipped with an integrated circular slide rule that made it possible to perform mathematical operations directly from the watch, it was not until 1984 that the collection was consolidated and acquired the identity by which it is recognised today.

This relaunch took place at a decisive moment for Swiss watchmaking, the revival of the mechanical watch after the quartz crisis of the seventies. In this new context, the mechanical watch ceases to be a strictly functional tool to become a symbol of tradition, identity and prestige.

Since 1979, Ernest Schneider, at the helm of Breitling, became aware that the Italian aerobatic squadron Frecce Tricolori was in the search for a new chronograph for its pilots. During this collaboration, based on the observations made during meetings with the team, Schneider identified a recurring problem: when opening the aircraft cockpit, the watch crystals frequently struck the metal frame, causing damage.

To meet this need, he decided to set the crystal into the bezel and protect it with four rider tabs, a solution as practical as it is distinctive. From this approach emerged, in 1983, a chronograph robust, highly legible and designed to meet the demands of military aviation, thus laying the foundations of the modern Chronomat.

A year later, in 1984, to mark the centenary of Breitling, the brand launched this mechanical chronograph in visionary fashion, laying the foundations for the development of a new emblematic reference within the Breitling ecosystem.

Rider Tabs: Added functionalities

The rider tabs on the Chronomat bezel are not solely a stylistic decision, but incorporate a practical functionality directly inherited from their aeronautical origins.

These elements, known as rider tabs, are positioned at the quarter-hours (15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes), allowing immediate time orientation and a more intuitive reading of elapsed time.

In addition to improving the watch’s legibility and making it easier to handle even with pilot gloves, these tabs serve a key function in marking and protecting the most important points on the bezel.

Their strategic placement not only protects the crystal against impacts, but also allows you to measure time intervals quickly and precisely, a fundamental need in the field of aviation.

Standout models in the Chronomat collection

The Chronomat collection was redesigned in 2020, incorporating technical and modern improvements, while keeping intact the aesthetic codes that define the original model. Among the most outstanding references of this refresh are the following:

BREITLING CHRONOMAT B01 42 MECHANICAL AUTOMATIC CHRONO 42 MM BLUE STAINLESS STEEL

It is the central and most representative model of the collection. It features the in-house Breitling B01 calibre, an automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. It stands out for its balance between sportiness, precision and versatility.
