Brilliant Cut: The Art of Shining in Diamonds

The brilliant cut is one of the most popular and recognised ways to cut a diamond. Its round and meticulous design, composed of 58 facets, allows the diamond to shine in all its splendour. Throughout the following article, you’ll discover the charms and distinctive characteristics of the brilliant cut, as well as the relationship between the size and weight of this precious stone.

The Essence of Brilliant Carving

The brilliant cut stands out for its ability to capture and reflect light in an exceptional way. Thanks to its carefully calculated angles and proportions, this cut maximises the brilliance, “fire” and luminosity of the diamond. Every facet is carefully considered in the finest detail, cut to allow light to penetrate and reflect dazzlingly, creating a play of light and sparkle that captivates everyone’s gaze.

The Versatility of Brilliant Size

One of the most outstanding advantages of the brilliant cut is its flexibility in balancing cut, colour and purity grades. This cut allows for a wide range of combinations, giving jewellers and designers the freedom to choose from a variety of characteristics without compromising the desired brilliance and sparkle. This flexibility has made the brilliant cut a popular choice for those seeking the ultimate beauty in their diamonds.

The Impact of Light: Brightness and Lustre

When light strikes a brilliant-cut diamond, some of it is reflected off the surface and some is transmitted into the interior of the diamond. Lustre refers to the amount of light reflected off the surface, while brilliance is the light that comes through the diamond’s table from within. In the case of diamond, the lustre is exceptionally high and is qualified as ‘adamantine’, which is the highest level of lustre for a transparent substance. The refractive index and the quality of the polish are key factors that influence the diamond’s lustre.

Dispersion and the Diamond Fire

In addition to brilliance, brilliant cut also contributes to the dispersion and fire of the diamond. Dispersion refers to the “scintillation” effect of colours that occurs in the diamond when light is broken down into different wavelengths. The dispersion value in diamond is very high, which contributes to its sparkling appearance. The combination of brilliance, lustre and dispersion makes brilliant cut diamonds truly dazzling.

The Structure of Brilliant Diamonds

The brilliant cut consists of two main components: the crown and the butt. The crown is the upper part of the diamond, while the butt is the lower part. These two sections are separated by a band called a girdle. The butt usually ends in a point, although sometimes it may be slightly truncated to protect the diamond from knocks. In total, the brilliant cut has 57 facets (58 if the culet is included), with 33 facets on the crown and 24 on the butt. These facets are carefully designed to let in light and reflect it dazzlingly.

The Importance of Angles and Proportions

The modern brilliant cut is based on the principles established in a theoretical study conducted by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. This study defined the optimum angles and proportions to achieve maximum brilliance and dispersion in a brilliant cut diamond. According to the recommended proportions, the following measurements are considered good:

– Board diameter: 53% a 64%

– Crown height: 12% to 15%.

– Depth of stock: 42% to 44%.

On the other hand, the proportions considered to be defective are:

– Board diameter: less than 53% or more than 64%.

– Crown height: less than 10% or more than 16.5%.

– Stock depth: less than 41% or more than 46%.

These proportions ensure that light is properly refracted within the diamond, maximising brilliance and sparkle. Aspects such as symmetry, polish quality, girdle thickness and condition, as well as the presence and size of the culet are also considered in assessing the quality of the cut.

Relationship Between Size and Weight in Brilliant Cut Diamonds

The brilliant cut has well-defined proportions, which allows a rough estimation of the weight from the diameter of the stone. It is important to note that other factors, such as the thickness of the girdle, the depth of the butt, the width of the table and the presence of the culet, may influence the actual weight of the stone.

Despite these variations, it is generally accepted that a three-millimetre brilliant diamond weighs approximately 0.1 carat (ten points), while a 5.2 mm diamond would weigh about 0.5 ct. On the other hand, a one carat diamond would measure approximately 6.5 mm. Below, we leave you a table where you can consult the approximate carat weight depending on the size of the diamond:
