3 iconic collections from IWC: Pilot’s Watch, Big Pilot’s Watch, and Portofino

Since 1868, IWC Schaffhausen has created watches that transcend fashion trends and become technical benchmarks. Among all its families, three collections define the identity of the company: the Aviator, Big Pilot and Portofino watches.

Each was born in a different context, with clear objectives. One is dedicated to the world of aviation, another to mechanical power, and the third to classic elegance. Over time, all three have grown to become pillars of the IWC catalogue and recognised symbols of Swiss haute horlogerie.

IWC Pilot’s Watches: The Spirit of Precision

IWC’s aeronautical heritage began in the 1930s, when the brand developed reliable instruments for professional pilots. In 1936, it introduced the Special Watch for Pilots, designed to withstand vibrations, sudden temperature changes and extreme pressures. Its aesthetics were inspired by cockpit control panels: large numbers, luminescent hands and a triangle with two dots at twelve o’clock, which made it easier to orientate the watch during flight.

In 1940, the Big Pilot’s Watch Calibre 52 T.S.C. appeared, a large model designed to be legible even when wearing gloves. This piece defined the style that continues to guide the collection.

Over the decades, IWC’s Pilot’s Watches evolved, but always retained that combination of functionality and technical design.

The automatic calibres, produced in Schaffhausen, guarantee precision and durability. The design remains practical and recognisable: black or blue dials, white Arabic numerals and a sturdy leather or fabric strap. Each model continues to follow the same principle that inspired the first: to offer an instrument watch, designed to last and be easy to read in all conditions.

Big Pilot: the mechanical power of IWC

The Big Pilot collection represents the essence of IWC. Its history dates back to the military model of 1940, but it was reborn in 2002 with a new in-house calibre and a design that retains the original proportions. It is a watch with a powerful presence, designed for those who appreciate watchmaking engineering in its purest form.

Its 52000 calibre, developed by IWC, offers a seven-day power reserve thanks to a double barrel system. The movement incorporates technical ceramic components that reduce wear and improve efficiency.

The dial design is clean and functional: large numerals, a power reserve indicator at three o’clock and a date window at six o’clock. The large, conical crown remains a direct nod to the original pilot’s watches, which allowed the watch to be wound while wearing gloves.

The Big Pilot is available in steel, titanium, gold or ceramic, and in some limited editions in bronze. Each material expresses a different facet of the watch: technical, sporty or sophisticated. In all of them, the finish is impeccable, and the feel on the wrist is solid, characteristic of IWC.

Although it was born as an aviation tool, today the Big Pilot is a cultural icon. It represents the connection between tradition and innovation that defines the Schaffhausen-based company.

Portofino: understated elegance

The Portofino collection was born in 1984 with a simple idea: to create a classic watch that was easy to wear and true to the style of the Italian coastline that gives it its name. Inspired by the design of the old Lépine pocket watch, its aesthetics combine proportion and sobriety.

Portofino watches are distinguished by their round case, slender leaf hands and clear dial. Inside, they are powered by automatic or manual IWC-manufactured movements with functions including date, chronograph or moon phase.

The Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase model is one of the most recognisable, with an eight-day power reserve and a visible indicator on the dial.

The range combines Italian leather straps with metal bracelets, always maintaining a balance between comfort and refinement.

Unlike the technical collections, Portofino represents the more serene side of IWC. It is the watch for those who seek discretion but appreciate Swiss precision and craftsmanship. Its success has made this line one of the most enduring and versatile in the catalogue.

The three collections showcase the different facets of IWC Schaffhausen.

The Pilot’s Watches reflect the brand’s heritage as an instrument manufacturer. The Big Pilot symbolises mechanical engineering pushed to the limit. Portofino embodies effortless elegance.

Different in form, united by the same philosophy: watches built with purpose, precision and character.

From its workshops in Schaffhausen, IWC continues to perfect these families that have marked the history of Swiss watchmaking.
