Riviera by Baume & Mercier: features and history

Baume & Mercier’s Riviera is one of the most iconic watch collections, renowned for being one of the first luxury sports watch series in history.

In this article we review the history and appearance of the Riviera, as well as the characteristics and changes of the references in the collection over the years. We also incorporate a selection of references available at Ideal Joyeros as official distributor of Baume & Mercier.

History of the Riviera de Baume & Mercier

Riviera by Baume & Mercier: features and history

The Riviera, introduced by the house in 1973, was designed to captivate modern aficionados with its flat-link metal bracelet and innovative ESA 6192 electronic movement with date window.

Initially, its dial lacked the name of the collection, a feature that was added in 1979 along with a slimmer structure thanks to quartz movements. During the 1970s and 1980s, the collection expanded to include models of different sizes and combinations of materials such as steel, gold, and mixtures of the two, as well as introducing automatic and quartz variants, cementing its popularity.

In the mid-1980s and throughout the 1990s, Riviera evolved technically and aesthetically. In 1985, a third generation was launched with a softer, more rounded design, a screw-down crown for improved water-resistance, and new extra-thin quartz movements.

The line was enriched with mechanical options and details such as complete calendars showing moon phases and chronographs to celebrate its 20th anniversary. In the decades that followed, Baume & Mercier maintained its innovative essence, launching a sporty version in 2004 and, in 2007, the bold Riviera MAGNUM, which included models such as a limited-edition chronograph.

The year 2023 saw the introduction of the 39mm Riviera Baumatic version, available in blue, black and sandblasted titanium, reflecting an adaptation to contemporary tastes and technologies. In addition, the commitment to diversity has been maintained with models designed specifically for women, showcasing dials in striking shades of purple and blue, capturing the unique light of the French Riviera.
