Discover the history of Tag Heuer Monaco

In 1969, while most watches followed the conservative round-dial formulas of the mid-20th century, TAG Heuer launched something radical: a water-resistant automatic chronograph with a square case. This was not just a watch, but a statement of rebelliousness, modernity and automotive adrenaline.

TAG Heuer Monaco, named after the world’s most iconic Formula 1 race, is also recognized as a cultural icon. It became legendary on Steve McQueen’s wrist at Le Mans (1971), and has continued to evolve while remaining true to its maverick origins.

The race for innovation: Project 99 and Calibre 11

Discover the history of Tag Heuer Monaco

The Caliber 11 was one of the first automatic chronograph movements, developed by Heuer in collaboration with other manufacturers in 1969. Prior to this breakthrough, automatic watches and chronographs were separate technologies. Heuer, which had not made automatic watches until that time, began working on the project in the 1960s after seeing the growing demand for automatic watches. He joined a consortium under the name “Project 99,” which resulted in the creation of the Chronomatic movement, known as Caliber 11.

This innovative movement included two key features: the crown located on the left side of the case and a square case design for the Monaco, a flagship model of the brand. The combination of automatic winding with a chronograph was a milestone in watchmaking, transforming sports watches and giving rise to iconic models such as the TAG Heuer Monaco Chronomatic, launched on March 3, 1969. This watch, with its futuristic design and distinctive features, ushered in a new era in sports watchmaking.

Steve McQueen and fashion cinema

The Monaco’s cult status skyrocketed when Steve McQueen wore it in the 1971 film Le Mans. McQueen wanted to emulate Jo Siffert, an F1 driver sponsored by Heuer, and insisted on wearing authentic racing gear, including the watch.

The Monaco, which featured prominently throughout the film, became inseparable from McQueen’s image: fast and rebellious. This single appearance secured the watch’s legacy, and collectors still refer to it as ‘McQueen’s Monaco’.

A timeless evolution: From the 1970s to the present day

Discover the history of Tag Heuer Monaco

The original Monaco (Ref. 1133B) had a metallic blue dial, square registers and distinctive red hands. Despite its uniqueness, it was a commercial unknown. It was discontinued in 1975, when the quartz crisis and changing tastes hit the Swiss industry hard.

In 1997, TAG Heuer resurrected the Monaco, recognising its growing cult following. The reissue was faithful to the original 1133B and used updated automatic movements. This relaunch coincided with a broader revival of heritage watches and vintage aesthetics.

In the 2000s TAG Heuer expanded the legacy of the Monaco with creative reinterpretations such as the Monaco Gulf editions (with the famous blue-orange racing stripes), Calibre 12 models offering slimmer profiles and smoother chronograph operation, or limited anniversary editions such as the 40th (2009) and 50th (2019).

Each decade since the relaunch has seen a new Monaco that respected the DNA of the 1969 version, while adapting to modern trends in design and engineering.

Today’s flagship Monaco models house the manufactured Heuer Calibre 02, which offers 80 hours of power reserve, column wheel and vertical clutch for a fluid chronograph function and sapphire casebacks, skeleton dials and high-tech materials.

TAG Heuer now embraces both the heritage reissue philosophy and forward-looking design, keeping the Monaco relevant to a new generation of collectors.
