The most famous watches in cinema

The seventh art not only gives us fascinating stories and unforgettable characters, but it has also given us the opportunity to appreciate timepieces that have become true icons in popular culture.

In this article we take a look at some of the most famous watches that have become part of the history of the seventh art.

The 6 most famous watches in film history

In the world of cinema, watches can become key elements that define a character or add a distinctive touch to the plot.

Here is our selection of some of the most iconic models from the world of cinema from the watch brands we work with at Ideal Joyeros as an official distributor.

Le Mans – TAG Heuer Monaco

In 1971, the film “Le Mans” brought us the first appearance of a revolutionary watch: the TAG Heuer Monaco. This TAG Heuer timepiece features a 39mm case that can be found in steel or titanium, but if there is one thing that makes it stand out in watch history, it was the first to feature a square case.

Steve McQueen, the charismatic star of the film, wore this watch, marking a milestone in the history of fashion and watchmaking. The TAG Heuer Monaco, in addition to having entered the history of fine watchmaking, is a symbol of the Le Mans race and of McQueen himself.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice – Breguet Tradition Tourbillon 7047PT

When Ben Affleck played Batman in Dawn of Justice, his character was accompanied by a symbol of precision and craftsmanship: the Breguet Tradition Tourbillon 7047PT.

This Breguet watch with a 41 mm platinum case is distinguished by its tourbillon. The tourbillon, created by the watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1800, is an ingenious mechanism that counteracts the effects of gravity on the running of a watch in a vertical position. The Breguet 569 hand-wound movement and the silicon balance-spring make this watch a very distinguished timepiece from the brand.

Moonfall – Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch

Space exploration has left a mark on the history of both mankind and watchmaking. In “Moonfall“, Patrick Wilson plays astronaut Brian Harper, and on his wrist is the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch.

With its asymmetrical 42 mm case in stainless steel and the Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 3861, this watch continues to be a tool in space.

Since 1965, this Omega collection has been NASA’s watch for manned space missions, a testament to the pioneering and adventurous spirit both on screen and in reality.

Blood Diamond – Breitling Chrono Avenger

In “Blood Diamond”, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Danny Archer, and on his wrist shines the Breitling Chrono Avenger. With its black dial, 44 mm solid titanium case and brown calfskin strap, this watch embodied the spirit of the character.

In the film, the watch from Breitling Avenger collection is worn by DiCaprio’s character Danny Archer, a diamond smuggler who is trying to save a child from civil war in Sierra Leone.

El Lobo de Wall Street – TAG Heuer 1000

The film “The Wolf of Wall Street” transports us to the world of finance, and the gold-plated TAG Heuer 1000 perfectly complements this setting. With its 38 mm steel case and elegant appearance, it reflected the world of high society in the 1980s. This TAG Heuer watch became yet another protagonist in the film.

During one scene, the character played by DiCaprio wears a gold Tag Heuer 1000. From his desk, he proclaims to his partners and employees that he has acquired a watch worth $40,000.00, although in reality the price is considerably lower.

Doctor Strange – Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual

Benedict Cumberbatch took elegance to a new level in “Doctor Strange” with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual. This watch with a rose gold or stainless steel case conceals a calibre 868 self-winding mechanical movement and is complemented by perpetual calendar functionality.

In the film, Cumberbatch plays Dr. Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who wears the watch. Jaeger-LeCoultre specifically chose to collaborate with the Doctor Strange film because of its relationship with time.

Other important watches in the film scene

While it is impossible to attempt to condense the multitude of watches that have made their mark on the silver screen into a single article, we cannot finish without at least mentioning many others that have made their mark in the history of cinema.

  • The Cartier Santos was introduced in 1904 and is considered the first wristwatch in history and one of the most iconic watches in the world. In the film Wall Street, this Cartier is worn by Gordon Gekko, an ambitious stockbroker played by Michael Douglas.
  • The Panerai Luminor is a diver’s watch worn in the film Daylight by Sylvester Stallone, who plays a man who has to rescue a group of people trapped in a tunnel. This watch was subsequently sold for far more than its value and was a key moment in the more recent history of the Panerai brand.
  • The Omega Seamaster 300M Quartz is a diver’s watch that was introduced in 1993. In the film GoldenEye, it is worn by James Bond, a secret agent played by Pierce Brosnan. Bond wears the watch in several action scenes, including a scene where he has to dive into the ocean to escape from a submarine. Omega watches are an indispensable accessory for Agent 007 and we can see him wearing different models in most of his films.
