History of Glashütte

The roots of Glashütte Original go back to 1845. More than 175 years ago, the first watchmakers came to Glashütte in Saxony to manufacture watches and timepieces in their hometown and, in time, to create world-renowned timepieces. In the middle of the 19th century, a unique success story began to unfold in a small valley in the Ore Mountains, just 30 kilometres from the Saxon state capital of Dresden. In 1845, the first watchmakers began to settle in Glashütte thanks to financial support from the government.

With the help of a loan from the Kingdom of Saxony, they began to train the town’s inhabitants, who later became independent watchmakers. This laid the foundations of the Saxon watchmaking industry and Glashütte watches soon became synonymous with outstanding quality in all corners of the world. To preserve this knowledge for the future, the Glashütte School of German Watchmaking was founded in 1878.
