Glashütte Original presents its new annual editions: Sixties and Sixties Panorama Date

A legendary design in vivid orange

The Sixties line features the legendary design of the 1960s and embodies the watchmaking art of Glashütte, whose traditions date back to 1845. The lively and open-minded collection, dedicated to the spirit of the times, is not for nostalgia lovers. In 2018, this popular line presented the first of its stunning annual editions. The fascinating green versions have inspired watch and design enthusiasts all over the world. Now Glashütte Original is launching an exciting sequel to this success story: for its 2019 annual edition, the German manufacturer is presenting the Sixties and Sixties Panorama Date models in multi-faceted shades of orange.

The new models incorporate unusual gradient dials, just as radiant as the turbulent decade for which they are named. In the 1960s, the world was changing at breakneck speed, inspired by daring visionaries, unprecedented freedom and bold ideas in art, culture, politics and society. The dynamism of this decade continues to inspire artists, designers and musicians today, as well as the master watchmakers of Glashütte Original.

Unmistakable style thanks to filigree craftsmanship

The new orange-coloured Sixties and Sixties Panorama Date models underline the unmistakable retro-chic essence of the line. The watch face has its characteristic curvature, from the dial and hands to the sapphire crystal, which is anti-reflective on both sides. Arabic numerals, diamond-cut hour markers, hand-applied hour markers and hands highlighted with Super-LumiNova® add harmonious nuances.

An idiosyncratic yet elegant design, a statement that applies not only to the details but to the dial as a whole. Starting with a golden yellow in the centre, the colour flows across the curved surface and changes to deep orange and red before reaching the black perimeter. The result? Dazzling vibrancy, warmth and energy. Credit for this impressive array of different shades, also known as dégradé or gradé effect, must go to the experts at Glashütte Original’s in-house dial manufacture in Pforzheim, Germany.

After a galvanic bath, which gives the dial its golden yellow hue, the dial makers carefully apply a series of layers of red and black lacquer. The result of this filigree handcrafted process is a personal gradient that makes each dial unique. The final step is to heat the dials in an oven to fix the colours.

A shocking story

However, the seductive power of the Sixties goes beyond the play of colour. Behind the surface structure there is also a unique history. The bas-relief embossing is carried out using the original tools and methods of the 1960s. The individual dials are embossed on a 60-ton press, which was already in use at the time in the Pforzheim factory. In addition, during the 1960s, cross-border cooperation enabled Pforzheim to supply Glashütte with dials for the Spezimatic watch. This partnership, which began more than 50 years ago, culminated in the integration of this dial manufacturer into the Glashütte Original manufacture in 2012. Today, this innovative spirit is once again playing a decisive role in the development of the Sixties line, as each of the dials clearly confirms.

The new watches are powered by the in-house automatic movements 39-52 (for the Sixties) and 39-47 (for the Sixties Panorama Date). Developed in-house, these mechanisms are mounted in polished stainless-steel cases measuring 39 mm in diameter for the three-hand Sixties and 42 mm in diameter for the Panorama Date model. The vintage design is rounded off by a brown Louisiana alligator leather strap with a pin buckle clasp. As a 2019 annual edition, the Sixties and Sixties Panorama Date models are only available for a limited time in Glashütte Original boutiques and selected authorised retailers worldwide.
