Panerai Submersible Collection

The Submersible collection is part of Panerai’s evolution in the diving watch category in terms of precision, endurance, legibility and water-resistance with a timeless design.

These watches have become professional diving tools with a great history and tradition of the brand. At IDEAL Joyeros we are going to delve into their history, their characteristics and analyse some of their most popular models today.

History Panerai Submersible

The history of the Panerai Submersible is directly linked to the evolution and development of the Officine Panerai brand for over a century. The company, founded by Giovanni Panerai in 1860 in Florence, Italy, began as a workshop, boutique and the city’s first watchmaking school.

Over the years, Panerai has excelled in innovation and excellence in the field of watchmaking, with a strong focus on the production of precision tools for military and diving purposes.

The history of Panerai Submersible, as the brand’s line of diving watches, properly begins with the development of the Radiomir in 1916, a luminescent material patented by Panerai to improve the legibility of the dials and to be able to see in low light conditions. This innovation marked the beginning of Panerai’s specialisation in watches for underwater and night-time operations.

In 1936, Panerai developed the first prototype of what was to become the iconic Radiomir model, designed to meet the rigorous requirements of the Royal Italian Navy. This watch stood out for its high water resistance and readability under water, essential features for diving operations. Evolving technology and military needs led to the creation of the Luminor model in 1949, using a new luminescent material called Luminor, which replaced the

Radiomir due to its lower radioactivity and greater safety.

Panerai Submersible Collection

The Submersible collection watch, as we know it today, is the direct descendant of these early innovations. Over the years, Panerai has continued to develop and refine its line of divers’ watches, incorporating new materials and advanced technologies. Among these innovations

was the launch of the “Egiziano” model in 1956, designed for the Egyptian navy and known for its large case size and crown protection device, a hallmark of many Panerai watches.

Panerai Submersible Collection

It was in 2019 that Panerai Submersible became an independent collection.

Over the years, Submersible has become one of Panerai’s most popular collections. The brand has expanded the range with different models with ceramic case versions, chronographs, tourbillon

Features of the Panerai Submersible collection

Inspired by Panerai’s historic military watches, the Submersible collection features a robust and masculine aesthetic. It features a case available in titanium, stainless steel or ceramic that is water-resistant to depths of 300 metres.

These watches are not only stylish, they are also really useful. They feature unidirectional rotating bezels, central seconds hands and luminescent hands and indices for optimal readability at depth.

Panerai equips Submersible watches with in-house manufactured automatic movements, renowned for their precision. Some models even offer additional complications such as chronographs or tourbillons.

The Submersible collection offers a wide variety of options to suit different tastes and needs. From classic three-hand models to those with complications, there is a Submersible for every lover of high-end watchmaking. One of the models of particular note is the Panearai Submersible QuarantaQuattro.

Panearai Submersible QuarantaQuattro

The Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro is reminiscent of the Submersible Luminor 1950, with a case diameter of 44 mm instead of 47 mm. This series of watches are designed with a stainless steel case and are water-resistant to 300 metres, making it a reliable diver’s watch.

The dial is available in different colours with luminescent indexes and hands for an elegant and sporty design.

The Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro features hour, minute, small seconds and a date window at 3 o’clock as well as a ceramic counter-clockwise rotating bezel with graduated scale. Inside these watches is Panerai’s P.900 movement, automatic with a power reserve of 3 days, guaranteeing the precision and reliability of the watch.
